Estoril Surf Women’s Pro returns in 2012 with a change in dates to September for a better swell window in Praia da Bafureira, Cascais – Portugal. The Portuguese event has been a regular stop on the European leg of the ASP World Tour since 2008 and became increasingly popular to many of the World’s Best Women Surfers.

Joana Rocha, an experience competitor on the ASP European Tours, and in charge of the organization of this event with her sister Rita and their company Rocksisters, is delighted to once again have the opportunity to host a 6-Star Women’s event in her local town of Cascais.

Up until last year, the event used to run in June, but the decision was taken in 2012 to move the Estoril Surf Women’s Pro to September 21-23, to coincide with a better wind and swell window on the Portuguese coast. Forecast analytics show that September is the perfect time of year to run the event with a swell consistency of 78% and an average size of 6Ft. Winds are also very favorable with an offshore North-East dominancy throughout the early Autumn season.

Joana Rocha, who has been a regular European Top 10 finisher on the ASP rankings, has taken on the development of Women’s surfing in Portugal and is proud to lead a movement intended to bring Portuguese Women’s surfing to the best international level.

“One of the most important issue is that Portuguese surfer girls can compete with the best surfers in the world. Every year we give a big push in this direction, to have a Portuguese on the Women’s World Tour in a couple of years ! That’s what we really want and so does Portugal ! Surf is one of the most important sports here, so RockSisters and Portugal want to do everything that we can to support the sport and the athletes. Every year a lot of people all around Portugal, Spain and France come to Cascais to see the competition and to get to know all the professional girls. This counts as a huge income for the hotels, restaurants and shops. This is a very important event for our community. Surf, Sailing, Horse Riding, Moto GP, Tennis and Golf are the main sports in Cascais !”

The Estoril Surf Women’s Pro is made possible with the support of the following event partners:  Cascais City Hall, Turismo Estoril amongst others.

Sol Domus has many apartments in the area of Cascais and Estoril, check this amazing property that can house up to 34 people.

Is Portugal a good place to surf?

There isn’t a better place to surf in any corner of Europe! Portugal is one of the best European Surf Spot, because there isn’t another country with so many good days to surf and so many different beaches. Portugals moderate climate and the long and amazing coastline gives to this little peace of surfers heaven the best condition to surf all year.

In Portugal the surfers can count on waves that require a lot of expertise to surf them, like Peniche supertubes or the Coxos in Ericeira. But not all beaches are for advance surfers, the Costa da Caparica beach is the best place to learn how to surf due to the soft sand bottoms.

Portugal is part of Surf History, with the first world surf reservation, and with the biggest wave surfed in Nazaré.

History

In the beginning, an encounter and an initial commitment:

In 2008, the director of a company based in Switzerland’s Vaud region, Marco Simeoni, had just created the holding company Veltigroup and was just looking for an appropriate means of communicating when he got to know Swiss skipper, Stève Ravussin. From this encounter came the fitting-out of an evolutionary catamaran at the heart of a Swiss championship. An endorsement followed and a Decision35 began to sport the colours of Veltigroup!

The revival of the oceanic multihull:

The 1980s represented the advent of the multihull with a number of fabulous projects, though all too often they were overambitious. From that point, all the protagonists were keen to redefine a framework with strict dimensions: it was the birth of the 60 foot multihulls; a class measurement which would then form a unity within a class known as ORMA (Ocean Racing Multihulls association), which was governed according to an open class measurement.
After 15 years of adventures offshore and following the Route du Rhum 2006, the ORMA class ended up undergoing massive change: changes of status, an evolution in the Board of Directors, the nomination of a new President, Patrick Chapuis, and an Executive chairman, Franck David.
It was at the start of the Vendée Globe 2008 that Stève Ravussin and Franck David, who has accompanied the former in his various sailing projects since 1999, presented the Multi One Design project to Marco Simeoni. Its ethos centred on completely identical oceanic multihulls.

The concept of everyone racing on an equal footing on the ocean planet appealed to the Swiss company director. Indeed the latter didn’t think twice about investing in and working on the idea, initially refining the overall concept by bringing an international and eco-friendly dimension to it! Marco Simeoni signed an order for five MOD70s, which was the starting point for “The Multi One Design Story…”.

Besides the sporting aspect, which the enthusiastic entrepreneur fully believes in, this committed man also saw in this class a means to promote an environmental notion which is dear to him. Marco thus added a prerequisite to the realisation of this project: the preservation of water.

ONE NITHT AT AMÁLIA HOUSE is an original play by Filipe La Féria. This play is very different from the famous musical AMÁLIA by La Féria, that stayed in scene during 6 years and was represented in the biggest Europeans theatres;  Lisbon, Paris, Genebra, and other capitals through out the world, making the play an historical mark for the Portuguese Culture.

Lisbon Airport Metro Station

The best way to reach the center of Lisbon from the airport is taking the Metro from the new airport station inaugurated on 17th July 2012, or the AeroBus.

Once in the city, the Metro is the most efficient way to get around, especially to go between downtown and uptown. For daytrips, consider the regular trains or the excellent express bus services.

Lisbon Airport is located almost in the centre of the city, so you can be in your hotel just within minutes of your arrival.

There are several cheap professional transport services available, with prices comparable to a taxi. Of course, taxis are also a fast way to reach the city center. They are lined up outside the terminals, and even with luggage, it should cost you between 10 and 15 Euros. Be sure to ask for a receipt.

As from 17th July 2012, there is now a Metro (underground) station at the airport. This is a continuation of the red line which first stops at the new stations of Encarnação and Moscavide on its way to the Oriente stop, where it’s possible to quickly connect with the Gare de Oriente train station. The line then continues via several stops towards the final station of São Sebastião.

Several buses also stop right outside the arrivals terminal, and if you don’t have large luggage, you can take buses 44, 745, or 83 that run past the major avenues uptown and end up in the old city center.

Those with luggage should take either the AeroBus or AeroShuttle bus services, which run between the airport and the city center. A ticket may be purchased directly from the driver and currently stands at €3.50. The buses run every 20 or 30 minutes and stop at important points in the city such as Entrecampos, Campo Pequeno, Avenida da Republica, Saldanha, Picoas, Fontes Pereira Melo, Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade, Restauradores, Rossio, Praça do Comercio and Cais do Sodré. On board, there are screens showing each stop as the bus approaches the area, and a list of nearby hotels, which is extremely convenient if you’re not entirely sure which stop you need to get off at for your hotel.

If you are staying outside the city in Cascais or Estoril, there are also shuttle buses running every hour between 7am and 10:30pm.

If you rent a car at the airport, you will need to go down Avenida Cidade do Porto, from where you soon reach the Rotunda do Aeroporto, from which you should take Avenida do Brasil, leading you into the center of the city.

METRO (Subway/Underground)

Lisbon’s metro (subway or underground) is modern, clean, and efficient. It runs from 6:30AM to 1:00AM, and many of its stations are decorated with contemporary art, making it a tourist attraction in itself.

Some stops to note:

  • Cais do Sodre: For trains to Cascais and Estoril, trams for Belem, and ferries to the Monument to Christ.
  • Entrecampos: For trains to Sintra.
  • Sao Sebastiao: For the Gulbenkian Museum.
  • Jardim Zoologico: For the Sete Rios bus terminal for express buses to all over Portugal.
  • Colegio Militar-Luz: For the Colombo shopping mall and the Benfica stadium.
  • Oriente: For national and international trains, city buses, and all the Parque das Nações attractions.

TRAM Nº28

 TRAM º28 – Discovering Lisbon

One of the best ways to learn about Lisbon and rediscover the city is by travelling aboard the nº28 Tram, which departs from Martim Moniz and Campo de Ourique (Prazeres Cemetery), and travals past some of the most charismatic districts of the Portuguese capital.

The historical neighbourhoods of Alfama and Graça and the most fashionable side of modern Lisboa reflected by Chiado and those of Estrela and Campo Ourique are part of the route of this already famous tram which runs daily rides through Lisbon in an authentic time travel.

Throughout the trip it is well worth looking closely at the architecture of the buildings – the result of diverse influences – as well as the ceramic tiles – typically Portuguese art – that line the facades and Art Nouveau styles friezes. Tram nº28 is one of several trams originally imported from the United States in 1901 with the aim of replacing the old horse-drawn carriages, which were the main means of transport at the time. Its yellow painted exterior is unmistakable as well as its wood interior, transporting passengers to other eras.

Aboard the nº28 Tram, visitors have the opportunity to explore the many facets of this “white city”, which blends, like no other European Capital, centuries of history with a modern lifestyle.

Surfing at Malveira da Serra: Guincho Beach

Gracefully nested in a beautiful valley of the Sintra mountains, the pleasant village of Malveira da Serra sits in the backdrop of the unique Guincho beach, 3 km away.

In a protected area and surrounded by mountains and dunes, Guincho is blessed all year round with consistent swells from the NorthWest, offering multiple breaks in the 800m long sandy beach, for around 350 days of surf a year. Expect glassy conditions in the morning, with frequent onshore winds in the afternoon, a delight for wind and kite surfers, who often consider Guincho a prime spot in Europe. On windier afternoons, surfers can take the world famous “Estrada do Cabo da Roca” across the mountains, and head to Praia Grande beach, deeper in the mountain range and a mere 15 minutes away.

Expect tubes from as little as 3 feet waves.

For those looking to develop their skills or initiating in this sport, there is a surf shop and school in the centre of Malveira da Serra village, offering transfers to and from the beach.
